  • Born in 1957 in South Africa the town of Potchefstroom
  • When he was 5 years of age his family moved to Carletonville, a mining town.
  • His father was a homeopathic practitioner who believed in natural healing by method of herbs. He lost his dad in a car accident on the age of 13.
  • Joe was fascinated by the capability of the human body. He took part in amateur wrestling, judo, boxing, royal ballet and modern dancing. He combined parts of these arts to defend himself against school bullies.
  • He was in the military from 1975-1977. He was introduced to Kyokushin Kai Karate, which is a full contact karate style. He did this style up to 3rd degree black belt. He combined all the above-mentioned arts to form his own style called Ring Contact Fighting Art in 1984.
  • In 1985 Joe Viljoen received the certificate of Instructor of the Year by the Professional Karate Association, presented by Joe Corley.
  • On 22 April 1989 Master Joe Viljoen won the W.P.K.A Middle weight world title against Christopher Baxter from the U.S.A. and became the first kickboxing world champion in South Africa.
  • In 1990 Joe Viljoen became the representative of K.I.C.K. (Karate International Council of Kickboxing)
  • In 1991 he took a junior and senior springbok team to the USA Open championships. They received from 2nd to 8th place in the tournament. Which is a point system of fighting. To prove that his capability in teaching his students can do well against the top in the world.
  • In 1992 he took a team to participate in the Battle of Atlanta held in the USA. At this event he took Henk Pelser whom he has trained for many years to fight against Rick Roufus. The bought went 8 rounds against the “Legend” of kickboxing, Henk lost by Knock out (K.O). This inspired Joe Viljoen.
  • Joe Viljoen was the representative for WKA and WAKO Pro in South Africa.
  • He trained and managed 5 World Champions namely: Shorne Moorcroft, Edward Makabella, Tollie Enslin, Boeta Austen, and Jakes Els.
  • He managed Richard Ndunana and Clinton Merchant. Richard Ndunana was trained by Alpheus Mokwena and Clinton Merchant by Paddy Carsons.
  • These fighters were fighting in W.K.A., W.P.K.A., WAKO, and RCFAI.
  • Joe Viljoen trained numerous students to be listed on the world ratings of various World organizations.
  • Joe Viljoen trained numerous special protection units.
  • Joe Viljoen had numerous contracts with the S.A.B.C. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) and has highlighted many fighters in his promotions.

  • From becoming the first Kickboxing World champion in South Africa to train many point fighters and World professional Kickboxing Champions. He is positive he can give the necessary exposure to fighters in the world.
  • Joe Viljoen took many fighters to compete across the world and have established excellent working relationships with trainers and promoters.
  • For relaxation he loves the outdoors and watching wildlife and birds.
  • Joe Viljoen is the co-author of the first Bird Guide of the Vredefort Dome. The Vredefort Dome is the largest meteorite impact crater in the world and is situated in South Africa.
